The Municipality of Beliaivka is preparing an ambitious new initiative that combines biodiversity conservation, sustainable fisheries, environmental education, and improved public infrastructure at the main entrance to the Lower Dniester National Nature Park. This location serves as the principal river access point for fishermen, researchers, park rangers, local communities, and visitors exploring the unique Lower Nistru river–floodplain ecosystem.

The need for this project has become even more urgent as the ongoing war has profoundly affected Beliaivka and the wider Lower Dniester basin. Beyond the devastating human consequences, the conflict has placed growing pressure on freshwater ecosystems. Economic disruption has delayed essential environmental infrastructure, while local waterways and habitats have become increasingly vulnerable to pollution and degradation. The fishing sector, which supports many local livelihoods, has faced significant challenges, and environmental education efforts have often been overshadowed by the immediate demands of wartime.

Located next to the internationally recognised Lower Dniester National Nature Park, Beliaivka is also part of one of Europe’s most important wetland landscapes. Military activities, fires, pollution risks associated with the conflict, and repeated air-raid alerts have created additional pressures on wildlife and protected habitats. The park provides a vital refuge for migratory birds travelling along one of Europe’s major flyways, yet frequent disturbances can interrupt migration, breeding, and nesting behaviour, highlighting the importance of continued conservation and environmental stewardship even during times of conflict.

Today, the park’s main gateway lacks even the most basic environmental infrastructure. Despite welcoming fishermen, researchers, conservation teams, and visitors every year, there are no adequate sanitary facilities, and the surrounding neighbourhood is not connected to a modern sewerage system. This creates unnecessary risks to water quality in the Lower Nistru River, its floodplain lakes and wetlands, and the habitats that sustain migratory fish, birds, and countless other species.

The project will transform this strategic location by constructing a modern Sanitary Pavilion alongside a new Fisheries & Biodiversity Information Point. The visitor centre will become a focal point for environmental education, showcasing the extraordinary biodiversity of the Lower Dniester National Nature Park, the importance of conserving migratory fish, birds, and their nesting habitats, sustainable fisheries, and the restoration of healthy river–floodplain ecosystems. It will provide a welcoming space where local communities, schools, scientists, fishermen, and visitors can learn about the park’s natural heritage and the importance of protecting it for future generations.

An equally important component of the initiative is the preparation of a technical project for a modern sewerage system serving the adjacent neighbourhood. This implementation-ready design will lay the foundation for future investment in wastewater infrastructure, helping reduce pollution entering the river, improve public health, and protect the ecological integrity of the National Nature Park.

The initiative complements the broader vision of DANUBElifelines by combining scientific monitoring of fish populations and habitats, hydromorphological and sediment assessments, feasibility studies for reconnecting floodplain lakes and river channels, and the development of a long-term river–floodplain restoration and sediment management plan. These actions will help restore ecological connectivity, strengthen climate resilience, and improve conditions for migratory fish and freshwater biodiversity while supporting the long-term recovery of a river landscape affected by war.

By connecting nature restoration with better public infrastructure, The Municipality of Beliaivka is taking an important step towards safeguarding the Lower Nistru River, supporting sustainable fisheries, protecting internationally important wetlands for migratory birds, and preserving this remarkable freshwater ecosystem for generations to come.
