People Friendly Cities of Poland

The “People Friendly Cities of Poland” project promotes Poland as a hospitable and self-governing nation by presenting a compelling narrative about contemporary Polish cities in the public space of Walvis Bay, Namibia. This narrative revolves around the triad of transformation, innovation, and newcomers, aiming to share Poland’s urban evolution with a diverse audience. A unique, interactive, three-dimensional typhlographic installation will be created on the city promenade of Walvis Bay, making it accessible to the visually impaired. This installation will map a “space” associated with Poland, inviting locals and visitors alike to engage in discussions about the quality of public spaces and the social roles of local governments. This first-of-its-kind installation in Namibia will showcase Polish cities’ progressive approaches, while simultaneously providing an opportunity to reflect on urban social issues.

The installation will offer a rich auditory experience through a series of podcasts, organized into three thematic cycles that mirror the triad defining modern Polish cities. The first cycle, Transformation, highlights Polish cities’ commitment to urban citizenship within the framework of global trends in participatory governance, accessibility, sustainable green development, and mobility. The second, Innovation, focuses on Poland’s urban technology and solutions aimed at creating healthier living environments, such as emissions reduction and sustainable green spaces. Finally, the Newcomers cycle addresses Poland’s response to regional situation, emphasizing both the resilience and integration of refugees into Polish society. It shares stories of Ukrainian newcomers who have integrated into Polish society, showcasing local governments’ and NGOs’ support systems that promote entrepreneurship, education, and community engagement. This narrative will offer both practical insights and personal stories, discussing topics like cyber-attacks on local government data, which reflect broader challenges faced in times of conflict.

The Development Policy Foundation is leading this project as part of a broader cooperation between Walvis Bay and the Polish commune of Czerwonak, supported by EU funding. This installation not only provides Namibia with a distinctive cultural experience but also serves as a powerful promotion of Polish urban values and innovations, underscoring Poland’s commitment to inclusivity and sustainable urban development. It stands as a symbol of intercultural dialogue, solidarity, and the importance of local government in building communities that welcome all—natives and newcomers alike. Through this initiative, the project aims to inspire a lasting dialogue about the shared values of inclusivity, resilience, and innovative problem-solving.
